It has become common today to go to the store and buy applesauce in a package. There is nothing wrong with this but making applesauce yourself saves on packaging, tastes better, you can add any extra ingredients and make as much as you want. It’s also cheaper especially if you have some old apples hiding in your refrigerator.
So, here is a simple applesauce recipe:
- 5 Apples
- 1 Lemon
- 1 to 2 tsp Cinnamon
You will need some method to ‘process’ the apples. In this recipe we’ll use a food processor. A blender would work too but you may need to make it in small batches.
Start by washing all your apples and the lemon.
Then cut the apples in fourths and remove the core along with any seeds.
Next cut the lemon in half and remove any of it’s seeds.
Place the apples in the food processor.
Squeeze out the lemon juice, catch any more seeds that may pop out and toss the lemons into the food processor along with the apples (skin and all). The lemons help preserve the applesauce and add an extra lemony ‘zing’ flavor.
Process until everything is pureed / made into apple sauce.
Add a teaspoon or two of cinnamon and process a little more.
Now you have a fresh batch of applesauce for a snack or to add to oatmeal or do whatever you want with it. Store in the refrigerator.
And here is some applesauce in my oatmeal for breakfast. Great job!
