Pomegranates are a great snack. They are typically in season from October to January.
How to prepare a pomegranate:
Start with a whole pomegranate
Slice it about 1/4 to 1/2 way through and peel the pomegranate apart into two or four pieces. Hopefully the seeds are fresh and bright red. If the seeds are brown or discolored the pomegranate may be spoiled and is probably not fit to eat. Use your best judgment.
Use your fingers to gently pop out the seeds into a bowl. Turn the the fruit inside out by pressing on the outside of the skin with your thumbs while using your fingers to gently ‘pop’ out the seeds.
Repeat process for remaining parts of pomegranate.
Rinse seeds if you prefer.
*Make sure to point the fruit / seed side of the pomegranate away from you or you risk ending up with little red stains all over your shirt.
Once the seeds are out, enjoy, I like to think of pomegranate seeds as nature’s skittles. YUM…
